UN General Assembly adopts Kyrgyzstan’s resolution on peaceful settlement of border disputes

On May 20, at the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution entitled “Peaceful Settlement of Border Disputes,” according to the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry.

More than 40 countries co-sponsored the document. The resolution was presented by the Kyrgyz Republic jointly with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The main purpose of the resolution is to share with the international community the historic achievement of the countries of the region: the ability to resolve sensitive issues through peaceful means (through dialogue, negotiations, and other mutually agreed methods) in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

The resolution proposes a simple and universal principle: when states face border disputes, the way forward should be peaceful, lawful, and based on dialogue.

The achievements of Central Asia highlighted in the resolution will serve as a constructive example for the entire international community, a model of good-neighborly relations, and a contribution by the countries of the region to strengthening international peace and security.

The adoption of the resolution is yet another confirmation and recognition of the ability of the Kyrgyz Republic and the countries of the region to peacefully resolve complex issues that had remained unresolved for decades.
