Protected natural territories occupy 14% of Uzbekistan

On January 11, Uzbekistan celebrated the Day of Nature Reserves and National Parks. This date serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving nature, rare species of plants and animals, as well as natural landscapes and ecosystems.

According to the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, the total area of protected natural territories in the country is 6.3 million hectares. In recent years, significant progress has been achieved in this field: while protected natural areas accounted for 4.5% of the country’s territory before 2017, this figure has now reached 14.1%.

In Uzbekistan, the system of protected natural areas continues to develop. Today, it includes 7 state nature reserves, 1 complex (landscape) sanctuary, 13 nature parks, 1 national park, 11 natural monuments, 2 biosphere reserves, 12 wildlife sanctuaries, as well as the Jayron special breeding center.
