The Uzbek cities of Tashkent and Samarkand have become members of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Green Cities Network, according to the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of Uzbekistan.
According to certificates issued by the Secretariat of FAO’s Green Cities Initiative at FAO Headquarters in Rome on 20 August 2026, Tashkent and Samarkand have officially been registered as member cities of the FAO Green Cities Network.
By joining the Network, the two cities have become part of a global community of cities working together to create greener, healthier, more sustainable and inclusive urban environments. The Network aims to promote sustainable urban development through integrated approaches to urban greening and to strengthen cooperation among participating cities.
The Network promotes integrated solutions and strategies in three key areas: urban and peri-urban forestry; urban and peri-urban agriculture; and sustainable bio-economy.
Membership in the FAO Green Cities Network will enable Tashkent and Samarkand to access technical assistance and capacity development support, exchange knowledge and experience, participate in inter-city cooperation platforms, receive support in aligning with relevant global frameworks and environmental agendas, develop partnerships, mobilize resources and attract investment and strengthen their international standing as leading cities advancing sustainable urban solutions.
Launched in 2020, the Green Cities Initiative (GCI) aims to support significant improvements in the health and well-being of people and the state of the environment in 1,000 cities by 2030.
