Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan deepen strategic partnership

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev arrived in Turkmenistan on an official visit on October 10.

At the International Airport of Ashgabat, the Kazakh leader was welcomed by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty (People’s Council) Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

President Tokayev held talks with his Turkmen counterpart, Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

Tokayev emphasized that Turkmenistan is a very close country and a natural strategic partner for Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan has been and remains a reliable ally of Turkmenistan on all issues — energy, transport, logistics, cultural and humanitarian cooperation.

Significant progress has been achieved in recent years in the development of trade and economic cooperation. Tokayev announced Kazakhstan’s readiness to expand exports to Turkmenistan by a total of $120 million across 80 commodity items.

Last year, the trade turnover between the two countries increased by 28% and exceeded half a billion US dollars. Tokayev said it can be increased to $1 billion, adding that an increase in the supply of Kazakh agricultural products, primarily wheat, to Turkmenistan is a promising area of cooperation.

According to Tokayev, last year, the volume of railway transportation between the two countries increased by 20% and reached about 1.5 million tons. A special role here is played by the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway, which is an important link in the North-South transport corridor. Construction of the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Afghanistan railway was also discussed.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov confirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to developing strategic partnership with Kazakhstan.

“We are very grateful to Kazakhstan for its strong support of Turkmenistan’s neutral foreign policy, as well as its international initiatives put forward within the UN and other international structures. We also attach particular importance to the development of trade and economic ties between our countries. We aim to continue our joint activities in such important areas as energy, transport, trade, agriculture, and high technology,” the Turkmen president said.

Following the talks, Tokayev and Berdimuhamedov signed the Declaration on strengthening friendship and deepening multifaceted strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

The Kazakh and Turkmen governments signed a solid package of documents, including the Agreement on strategic cooperation in the field of transport, logistics and transit; the Program for strengthening friendship and deepening strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan for 2025-2027; and the Agreement on mutual encouragement and protection of investments.

On the same day, President Tokayev and the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the opening of a monument to the famous Kazakh poet Abay Kunanbayuly on Astana Street in Ashgabat.
