The 300th anniversary of the poet’s birth has been included in the list of significant dates to be celebrated jointly with UNESCO in 2024-2025. The International Organization of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) declared 2024 “The Year of the Great Poet and Thinker of the Turkic World – Magtymguly Pyragy”.

In his address to the conference, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized that the great and rich heritage of Magtymguly predetermined the basis of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy — his ideas of peace, justice, humanism, friendship and brotherhood, respect for everyone have a significant impact on interaction with other states.

“The legacy of Magtymguly Pyragy is our great asset, and unwavering adherence to his precepts is our sacred duty. Being committed to his teachings, we will continue to strengthen the unity and cohesion of the people, the sovereignty of the state, and expand the bonds of friendship and brotherhood, good neighborliness and mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries of the world,” the Turkmen president said.

Speaking at the conference, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted that Magtymguly is the founder of Turkmen classical literature and an outstanding thinker of the entire East.

According to Tokayev, against the backdrop of a complex geopolitical situation and many global challenges, the legacy of the world-famous classic is becoming even more relevant.

“The poetry of Magtymguly Pyragy, deeply imbued with humanistic ideas, once again reminds us all of the enduring values of peace, trust and mutual respect. All his works are imbued with selfless love for the Motherland. He saw a bright future for his people in unity with the world and harmony with others,” the Kazakh leader said.

According to Tokayev, the opening of a monument to Magtymguly Pyragy in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana, in July became a vivid testimony of the unbreakable bonds of friendship and good neighborliness between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

Tokayev also noted that the day before, as part of his official visit to Turkmenistan, the opening ceremony of a monument to the great Kazakh poet Abay Kunanbayuly took place in Ashgabat. The works of Abay and Magtymguly are united by deep reflections on the future of their peoples and high ideas of humanism.

“Their rich spiritual heritage, which occupies a special place in the multifaceted culture of our peoples, is the property of all mankind. Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan are connected by common spiritual roots, common history, and centuries-old bonds of friendship. These unchanging values have become the basis for an active dialogue between the two states, which contributes to the further rapprochement of our peoples and the deepening of Kazakh-Turkmen relations,” Tokayev emphasized.
