The International Organization of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY) has declared the historical city of Andijan in Uzbekistan the ‘Cultural Capital of the Turkic World’ for 2026.
Andijan has taken over the prestigious title from the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan, which held the title throughout 2025.
TÜRKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev stated: “Aktau has brought together the entire Turkic World. Throughout this year, we have felt the richness of our common culture and the closeness of our kindred peoples in the most beautiful way. In the coming years, our cooperation in cultural diplomacy and joint projects will continue to grow stronger.”
Shuhratbek Abdurahmanov, the governor of the city of Andijan, said that Andijan is ready to introduce its ancient history and culture to the whole world in 2026 and added that it will be a great pleasure for him to take on this honorable task.
The International Organization of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY), the first intergovernmental cooperation body in the Turkic World, was established in 1993 through an agreement signed by the culture ministers of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Turkey. Since its founding, TÜRKSOY has worked to preserve the shared cultural heritage of the Turkic peoples, promote their common cultural values, and present them to the world.
Subsequently, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as well as the Republics of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Altai, Sakha, Tuva, and Khakassia within the Russian Federation, and Gagauzia in Moldova, have joined TÜRKSOY as observer members.
TÜRKSOY’s mission is to strengthen the bonds of unity and brotherhood among the Turkic peoples, transmit their common cultural legacy to future generations, and raise awareness of their rich traditions globally.
