Uzbekistan to launch ‘Eco-Active Citizen’ project

The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, together with the Ministry of Digital Technologies, has proposed launching the “Eco-Active Citizen” project by June 1, 2025.

The initiative will be implemented as part of the nationwide movement “One Million Green Families” and will include the “Healthy Lifestyle” platform. This proposal is outlined in the draft of the Presidential Decree, titled “On the State Program for Implementing the “Uzbekistan-2030” Strategy in the Year of Environmental Protection and the “Green” Economy”.

The initiative aims to create a system of incentives designed to promote eco-friendly lifestyles, enhance the ecological awareness of the population, enable harmonious coexistence with nature, and minimize the environmental impact of daily activities.

According to the proposal, the status of “Eco-Active Citizen” can be awarded for regularly using public transport, taking 10,000 steps or more per day, losing excess weight, reducing waste and plastic usage, and switching to an electric car. Additionally, it will consider actions such as installing solar panels on homes, using energy-saving materials for house facades, equipping lighting with motion sensors, conserving electricity, gas, and water, and actively participating in public ecological initiatives.

Citizens awarded the “Eco-Active Citizen” status will get discounts on public services and lower interest rates on consumer loans. Additionally, they may receive eco-friendly transportation options, such as bicycles or scooters, as incentives.

If all members of a family obtain “Eco-Active Citizen” status, the family will be awarded the status of “Green Family”, and families selected annually by lottery will be awarded an electric car.

In addition, neighborhoods (mahallas) where more than 50 percent of families hold the status of “Green Families” will be awarded the title of “Green Neighborhood”. In such neighborhoods, necessary conditions will be created for the construction of waste collection sites, installation of waste containers at public facilities, planting and watering of trees, and the creation of green public parks. Furthermore, settlements where more than 50 percent of neighborhoods are designated as “Green Neighborhoods” will receive the status of “Green City” or “Green Village”.
