Uzbekistan sees a demographic decline: the number of births fell by 46,800

For the first time since the pandemic, fewer than 900,000 births were registered in Uzbekistan: 879,600 children were born in 2025, 46,800 fewer than the previous year, marking the second consecutive decline in the birth rate, according to Tashkent Today.

The number of deaths reached 177,100, exceeding the pandemic year. The number of marriages fell for the fourth consecutive year to 267,100 (the lowest since 2010), while the number of divorces increased to 46,900.

According to the National Statistics Committee, the population of Uzbekistan increased by 1.8% and, as of January 1, 2026, reached 38.2 million. For the first time, men (19.25 million, or 50.4%) outnumbered women (18.97 million, or 49.6%).

The urban population reached 19.47 million, outpacing the rural population (18.76 million) by more than 700,000. Tashkent and the Tashkent region remain the main centers of internal migration.
