Turkmenistan hosts conference on the Caspian Sea

On August 11-12, celebratory events dedicated to the Day of the Caspian Sea were held in the Avaza National Tourist Zone in Turkmenistan.

The Scientific-practical conference entitled “The Caspian Sea – Sea of Friendship and Peace” was moderated by the Director of the Caspian Sea Institute Myrat Atajanov.

The event was attended by official representatives of Turkmenistan, ambassadors of Caspian states accredited in Ashgabat, heads of representative offices of international and regional organizations, including the UN, OSCE, EU, as well as international experts.

In his speech, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov noted Turkmenistan’s active and constructive role in promoting environmental issues in the Caspian region, in particular the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Aquatic Biological Resources of the Caspian Sea.

The importance of the Caspian Environmental Initiative, put forward by President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the plenary meeting of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, was particularly emphasized.

During the Conference, Turkmenistan’s commitment to close cooperation with the Caspian states, international structures and institutions, as well as stakeholders on the whole range of Caspian issues was noted.

The Conference listened to reports on the most pressing issues, including priority areas of cooperation among Caspian states in the fields of hydrometeorology, protection and scientific study of the flora and fauna of the Caspian Sea, and compliance with environmental standards and regulations.

The participants of the Conference noted that the Caspian Sea is a sea of friendship and peace, and called for continued joint work aimed at strengthening and expanding international cooperation for the sake of sustainable development and protection of the Caspian marine environment.
