Late in May, the Library of the Mary Velayat (province) hosted a Book Fair organized by the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan, the Government of Turkmenistan, and Mary American Corner. The Book Fair featured an exhibit of English-Turkmen bilingual editions of American classics and an extensive American literature collection for children and young adults as well as English and STEM learning materials. Book Fair attendees also received information on studying in the United States and on the eLibraryUSA digital library, according to the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan.
U.S. Ambassador Elizabeth Rood presented a collection of classic American literature that the U.S. Embassy translated into Turkmen to the Velayat Library as a gift from the people of the United States. In her opening remarks, Ambassador Rood noted: “Today we join students, parents, teachers, librarians, and citizens across Mary to celebrate the importance of reading and the unparalleled power of literacy. The simple act of opening a new book expands our knowledge, transforms our minds, and inspires strong leaders and thoughtful citizens.”
Book Fair visitors acquainted themselves with the newest additions to the bilingual collection of American classics — Hidden Figures, The Giving Tree, The Girl Who Helped Thunder and Other Native American Folktales, Best Little Word Book Ever! and What Do People Do All Day? To date, the U.S. Embassy has published 14 bilingual editions of American classics, making these stories more accessible to audiences in Turkmenistan. These publications and other U.S. literature on English learning, STEM, and professional development are available for check-out at American Spaces in Ashgabat, Mary, Turkmenabat, and Dashoguz.
