Kyrgyzstan’s parliament has passed amendments to road traffic safety legislation that toughen penalties for traffic violations, particularly in traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers.

The amendments have increased penalties for causing traffic accidents depending on the degree of injury:

– for serious injury, a fine between 100,000 and 200,000 soms (about $2,280) or imprisonment for up to five years with a license suspension for three to six years

– for very serious injury, imprisonment for five to eight years with a license suspension for six to nine years.
