Kyrgyzstan’s parliament has passed amendments to The Law on Limiting the Circulation of Polymer Film and Plastic Bags, set to take effect on January 1, 2027, 24.kg reported.
According to the Law, the following should have been banned throughout the country from 2027:
- all types of disposable plastic tableware
- disposable plastic food packaging
- PET plastic bottles (polyethylene terephthalate)
- disposable plastic egg packaging
- plastic coffee capsules
- grocery bags.
The amendments propose that the Cabinet of Ministers exclude PET plastic bottles and disposable plastic food packaging from this list.
According to initiators of the amendments, the restrictions that were supposed to be introduced in 2027 contradict the norms of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. The ban on PET bottles and disposable plastic food packaging could have a negative impact on the economy of Kyrgyzstan. The business communities in Kyrgyzstan and the EAEU countries have voiced concerns about the introduction of the ban.
The initiators of the bill emphasize the importance of recycling plastic, saying that more than 30 enterprises in Kyrgyzstan are currently engaged in the primary processing of plastic, including PET bottles.
