Kyrgyzstan: Improving Air Quality project to phase out coal heating in Bishkek

Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Finance has teamed up with local banks for implementing the “Improving Air Quality” project, aimed at supporting the transition of Kyrgyzstani households from coal heating to modern and environmentally friendly types of heating homes.

The project received $50 million financing from the International Development Association. $31.8 million of that amount will be disbursed to the population in preferential loans through three banks — state-owned Aiyl Bank and Eldik Bank and commercial Bakai Bank.

The project is aimed at reducing coal burning for heating homes and reducing harmful emissions, introducing energy-saving heating systems, and expanding the population’s access to modern environmentally friendly types of heating through low-interest loans.

The Ministry of Finance believes that the project’s credit line will allow more households to switch to modern environmentally friendly heating systems and thus contribute to improving air quality in the capital and surrounding areas.
