Kazakhstan ships grain to North Africa via Latvian port

The first batch of Kazakh grain has departed by rail for Morocco. The train consisting of 105 grain railcars will traverse Russia to Latvia, where in the Baltic port of Liepaja, the grain will be reloaded onto sea vessels heading to the coast of North Africa, according to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the country’s national railway company.

Kazakhstan plans to use this route for shipping a total of 17 trains loaded with 60,000 tons of grain produced in the northern region of the country.

According to KTZ, from September 2024 to April 27, 2025, the export by rail of the new harvest grain totaled 7.5 million tons, 56% more than in the same period of the 2023/2024 agricultural year.

The Ministry of Agriculture has reported a steady growth in the export of Kazakh grain to the countries of Central Asia and the Middle East.

Between September 2024 and the end of April 2025, grain exports to Uzbekistan rose 29.7% — from 2 million tons to 2.7 million tons, to Tajikistan — by 50%, from 718,000 tons to 1.076 million tons, to Afghanistan — by 33.8%, from 201,000 tons to 269,000 tons, to Kyrgyzstan — twofold, from 88,000 tons to 178,000 tons, to Iran — 16-fold, from 54,000 tons to 871,000 tons, and to Azerbaijan — 111-fold, from 5,000 tons to 557,000 tons.
