Kazakhstan generates more electricity from renewable energy sources

As Kazakhstan has experienced growing energy deficit, with the gap between electricity production and consumption reaching 2.4 billion kilowatt-hours in 2024, the country has prioritized the development of renewable energy sources (RES) for ensuring sustainable energy supply and combating climate change.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the share of electricity generated from RES in Kazakhstan reached 6.43% in 2024, compared to only 3% in 2020.

In 2024, RES generation amounted to 7.6 billion kWh of the country’s total generation of 117.9 billion kWh.

The increase in the RES electricity production was due to a consistent state policy aimed at improving the investment climate in the renewable energy sector.

At a May 22 meeting of the country’s Energy Council dedicated to the RES development, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov ordered to strengthen state support for RES projects and create all conditions for wider participation of the private sector in the construction and operation of RES facilities.

Today, government support measures for the RES sector include guaranteed purchase of electricity at auction prices, annual price indexation, and investment preferences.

Kazakhstan now has 154 renewable energy facilities with a total generating capacity of over 3 GW, including:

– 63 wind power plants (1.570 GW)

– 46 solar power plants (1.222 GW)

– 42 hydroelectric power plants (287.685 MW)

– 3 biogas plants (1.77 MW).

By 2030, the country plans to commission 93 new RES projects with a total capacity of 2.3 GW.
