Kazakhstan develops standard for camel milk

Kazakhstan has approved a national standard for pasteurized camel milk. The standard establishes uniform product requirements and aims to help domestic enterprises expand their product range and develop exports. The document will come into force on November 1, 2026, according to the Ministry of Trade and Integration.

In Kazakhstan, camel milk has traditionally been used to produce fermented dairy drinks such as shubat and kymyran. Over the past 15–20 years, global interest in camel milk has grown, along with the range of products made from it.

Camel milk is used to produce ice cream and confiture, as well as in coffee-based drinks. For example, it can be used to prepare camelccino, a camel-milk version of cappuccino. Pasteurized camel milk is used in the production of such products.

The new standard establishes requirements for product quality and safety, labelling, packaging, transportation and storage. It also defines common terminology, product classifications and indicators for assessing product characteristics.

The standard will enable producers to expand their product range for domestic and international markets. The countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, China and the Middle East are considered promising export destinations.

The introduction of uniform requirements is intended to support Kazakhstani producers and strengthen their competitiveness. Developing this sector will also help diversify exports and increase the international recognition of Kazakhstan’s camel-milk products.
