First stage of nuclear power plant construction begins in Uzbekistan

In the Forish district of Uzbekistan’s Jizzakh region, a press tour was organized to the construction site of the Small Modular Nuclear Power Plant (SMNPP), where media representatives were introduced to the implementation process of this strategic energy project.

Journalists inspected several key facilities, including:
— the excavation site for the first reactor unit, where vertical leveling work has been completed and 27 exploratory and technical wells have been drilled for engineering purposes;
— the construction and assembly base consisting of 11 facilities, including two concrete mixing units with a capacity of 250 m³ per hour each, and a reinforcement workshop equipped with Chinese machinery;
— a workers’ camp designed for 1,500 people, featuring 10 container blocks and a newly built dining facility.

According to the project management, 308 specialists and 177 units of equipment, including 10 dump trucks with a 70-ton capacity, are currently involved in the work.

By November 2025, 70% of the workforce will be Uzbek specialists, and a training center for nuclear industry personnel will open in Forish.

Director of the NPP Construction Directorate State Enterprise, Abdijamil Kalmuratov, stated: “The Small Modular NPP project is a step toward energy independence and economic growth. We are strictly following the schedule approved by the President, preparing to pour the ‘first concrete’ in March 2026, and ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.”

According to the national atomic agency O‘zatom, the SMNPP construction not only addresses the country’s energy challenges but also takes into account environmental aspects vital for the region. The project employs advanced technologies with minimal environmental impact and is being implemented under strict professional supervision.
