First Green University opened in Uzbekistan

The opening ceremony of the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies (Green University) took place in Uzbekistan’s Tashkent region on February 10 with the participation of the Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Grethel Aguilar, the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, Aziz Abdukhakimov, and the ministers of environment of Central Asian countries, the Uzbek Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change reported.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Aguilar emphasized the special role of Green University in solving the environmental problems of the region. “We congratulate the government of Uzbekistan on the opening of the Central Asian Green University, a major regional initiative that serves to develop environmental leadership and education. This university will help solve the triple planetary crisis of biodiversity loss, climate change, and air pollution. Through environmental education, the university will contribute to the conservation of a region rich in nature.”

The goal of Green University is the development of innovative ideas, practices and technologies for solving regional and global environmental problems, as well as strengthening regional cooperation in ecology and environmental protection.
