Foreign visitors encounter critical difficulties using public Wi-Fi networks in Uzbekistan. The main obstacle is the mandatory SMS authorization using a local phone number, which makes internet access unavailable immediately upon arrival, Tashkent Today reports.
Key problems:
• Tashkent Airport: Connecting to the Wi-Fi network requires an Uzbek SIM card, which tourists do not have upon arrival.
• Afrosiyob trains: Despite QR codes on seats, authorization is also tied to a local number and requires reconnection every 30 minutes.
• Registration: The registration system for foreign citizens requires a local number for access. This forces tourists to seek assistance from local residents to avoid fines.
• Air travel: Wi-Fi on board the national carrier, announced years ago, is virtually non-functional during flights.
Experts note that the current authorization system limits tourism potential and creates unnecessary difficulties for short-term visits.
