Kazakhstan has taken first place in the team standings of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, winning 7 gold (including three in women’s boxing), 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. The Uzbekistan team is second with 6 gold (all among men), 2 silver and 3 bronze medals, RFE/RL’s Azattyq Asia reported.
Brothers from Kazakhstan — Makhmud (24 years old) and Torekhan (19 years old) Sabyrkhan — entered the championship together for the first time and both won gold.
Kazakhstan won gold in the super heavyweight (over 90 kg) for the first time at the World Championships — Aibek Oralbay defeated Uzbekistan’s Jakhongir Zokirov (3:2).
Kazakhstan left Uzbekistan behind in the team standings thanks to victories of its women, who won three gold medals at this championship, as well as one silver and two bronze medals.
The championship in Liverpool was first organized by the World Boxing Organization, headed by legendary Kazakh boxer Gennady Golovkin, a world champion and silver medalist of the 2004 Olympics.
The Organization was created as an alternative to the International Boxing Association (IBA), headed by Russia’s Umar Kremlev. The International Olympic Committee accused the IBA of corruption and stripped it of the right to organize Olympic tournaments.
The IOC itself organized boxing competitions at the Olympics in Tokyo and Paris. The World Boxing Organization will organize the boxing tournament at the next Olympic Games in 2028 in Los Angeles.
