The Third International Uyghur Forum was held in Berlin from 11 to 13 June 2026, bringing together Uyghur scholars, writers, human rights advocates, policymakers, and representatives of Uyghur organizations from around the world. The event was organized by the World Uyghur Congress and the Uyghur Center for Democracy and Human Rights.
Representing Uyghur PEN, renowned Uyghur poet, writer, and activist Aziz Isa Elkun participated in the forum and delivered a presentation on 13 June highlighting two important recent publications: Uyghur Poems (Everyman’s Library, 2023) and Imprisoned Souls (Hertfordshire Press, 2025).
The presentation attracted considerable interest from conference participants, particularly during discussions on the role of literature in preserving cultural memory and documenting the experiences of the Uyghur people. Special attention was given to the importance of publishing Uyghur voices for international audiences and ensuring that their stories continue to be heard around the world.
Participants engaged in discussions about the ongoing repression of Uyghurs, the destruction of cultural heritage, and the importance of literary and cultural initiatives in safeguarding Uyghur identity. The two anthologies were recognized as significant contributions to preserving and promoting contemporary Uyghur poetry and testimony.
The forum once again demonstrated the vital role that literature, culture, and international cooperation play in raising awareness of Uyghur issues and supporting the preservation of one of Central Asia’s most important cultural traditions.
