Afghanistan and Uzbekistan seek to expand trade

Uzbekistan’s private sector has signed trade agreements and memorandums of understanding worth more than $5 billion with Afghanistan over the past eight months, TOLOnews reported citing the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI).

These agreements cover sectors including fresh and dried fruits, precious and semi-precious stones, coal, cement, carpets, cotton, raw materials, food products, and pharmaceuticals.

According to the chamber, during this period, multiple trade delegations traveled between Kabul and Tashkent, with discussions mainly focused on expanding trade ties and economic cooperation.

Mohammad Wali Amini, head of the ACCI executive board, emphasized: “As a result of these programs, the trade volume between the two countries — which previously stood at around $400 to $500 million — has now reached more than $1.5 billion, and it is expected to increase to nearly $5 billion within the next one to two years.”

Kabul and Tashkent are seeking to open a new chapter of economic cooperation between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, with the aim of increasing bilateral trade volume to $5 billion over the next five years.

According to analysts, achieving this goal requires extensive investment in transit, energy, industry, and the facilitation of export and import processes between the two countries.
