The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $43.27 million grant financing package to help Tajikistan build a more integrated health system that can better prevent, detect, and respond to disease outbreaks, natural hazard-related health risks, and cross-border health threats. The project will also support primary health care reforms and introduce integrated health and social protection services for survivors of violence against women and girls.
“The best way to respond to a health crisis is to be prepared before it happens,” said ADB Country Director for Tajikistan Ko Sakamoto. “This project will help Tajikistan strengthen its defenses against future disease outbreaks while delivering better health services to the people who need them most.”
The project will improve disease monitoring at major border crossings, enhance the capacity and efficiency of public health laboratories, and introduce digital and artificial intelligence tools to improve disease surveillance and emergency response. It will promote collaboration between human and animal health sectors through the global One Health approach and train health workers to address public health threats, natural hazard-related health risks, and violence against women and girls.
The project will focus on rural, remote, and border areas, helping people access better health services and enabling earlier detection of diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV. It will strengthen primary health care services to be more resilient to weather shocks and responsive to the needs of women and girls, raise public awareness of infectious and zoonotic diseases, and support women and vulnerable groups through improved risk communication. The project will also expand support for survivors of violence against women and girls through five specialized integrated service centers across the country.
