Uzbekistan to plant 125 million trees this autumn

A government meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed the implementation of Yashil Makon (Green Space), Uzbekistan’s nationwide program which aims to preserve and restore biodiversity through the greening of urban and rural areas.

Launched by President Mirziyoyev in November 2021, the Yashil Makon program is aimed at the planting of one billion trees and shrubs across the country over five years. It aims to increase the level of greening in Uzbek cities to 30 percent and create green belts around them.

It was noted at the meeting that out of 137 million saplings planted in spring, 27.5 million dried up. The reason was the early onset of heat, which prevented young trees from taking root, while their irrigation required 2-3 times more water.

In this regard, the need to expand autumn planting was emphasized. This autumn, 125 million trees and shrubs are planned to be planted, with another 75 million to follow next spring. At the same time, saplings must not be planted in areas lacking irrigation systems.

The acceleration of urbanization processes requires increasing green zones in cities and regional centers. To ensure scientifically grounded urban development according to “green” standards, it was instructed to involve scientists, urban planners, and environmental specialists in preparing “green” master plans for Tashkent, Nukus, and all regional centers within two months.
