Uzbekistan and Japan expand environmental cooperation

An Uzbek–Japanese Environmental Business Forum titled “Promoting Sustainable Development through Bilateral Cooperation in Uzbekistan” was held in Tashkent on March 11. The event aimed to strengthen cooperation between Uzbekistan and Japan in the fields of environmental protection, sustainable infrastructure and green technologies, according to the Uzbek National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change.

During the forum, participants presented Uzbekistan’s experience and policy approaches in environmental protection, as well as Japan’s initiatives aimed at advancing international environmental cooperation.

Representatives of government institutions and companies from both countries presented projects and technological solutions related to key environmental priorities. Discussions focused on monitoring and managing air quality and water resources, developing modern waste management systems and implementing climate change initiatives.

“Japan’s economic development and industrialization once had a negative impact on the country’s environment. However, we were able to overcome these challenges. Today, Uzbekistan is undergoing a similar phase of industrialization and development, which may naturally bring environmental challenges. Our cooperation is aimed at preventing such negative consequences. I am confident that this forum will become an important bridge for joint efforts in this area,” said Kentaro Doi, Deputy Minister of the Environment of Japan.

The forum marked another important step in strengthening environmental cooperation between Uzbekistan and Japan, promoting the adoption of modern technologies and advancing joint initiatives aimed at improving environmental sustainability in the region.

On the same day, Aziz Abdukhakimov, Adviser to the President of Uzbekistan on Environmental Issues and Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, met with a Japanese delegation led by Kentaro Doi, Vice Minister of the Environment of Japan.

Following the meeting, a Memorandum of Cooperation in Environmental Protection was signed between the National Committee of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Climate Change and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan.

The document provides for cooperation across several key areas, including combating climate change, reducing air pollution, preventing water pollution, and improving waste management systems.
