Turkmenistan has put into operation a new dry cargo vessel, Gadamly. This historic event is expected to strengthen Turkmenistan’s position in the Caspian Sea region as an important transport and transit corridor.
Built at the Balkan Shipyard in Turkmenbashi city in collaboration with Koryo Shipbuilding Industry Technology (Republic of Korea), Gadamly is designed for the transportation of dry cargo. Its carrying capacity is 6,100 tons. The ship is capable of carrying 240 20-ton containers, according to Turkmenistan State News Agency (TDH).
The ship’s official commissioning ceremony at the Turkmenbashi International Seaport on May 8 was attended by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov.
The Turkmenbashi seaport, located on the Caspian coast, is an important link on East-West and North-South transport corridors passing through Turkmenistan.
Speaking at the ceremony, Berdimuhamedov emphasized Turkmenistan’s efforts aimed at expanding the country’s transit and international cargo transport potential, as well as improving the national maritime industry.
“Turkmenistan plays a key role in the development of transnational transport and transit corridors along the East-West and North-South routes. In this regard, our country has developed a strong transport and logistics system, including new railway and highway routes, modern world-class airports, and the Turkmenbashi International Seaport,” the Turkmen president said, adding that today all efforts are being taken for the revival of the ancient Silk Road in a new format.
Berdimuhamedov also noted that this year, Turkmenistan, together with Korean partners, will commission another cargo ship, the Menzil, which will significantly expand the capabilities of the national commercial maritime fleet.
