Turkey’s Alarko Holding has inaugurated a large tomato greenhouse complex, ALSERA KZ, in Shymkent in south Kazakhstan.
The opening ceremony on November 20 was attended by Kazakh Agriculture Minister Aidarbek Saparov and Izzet Garih, Alarko’s Chairman of the Board.
Saparov emphasized that Turkey is one of Kazakhstan’s key partners in the agricultural sector, with 14 projects worth a total of $1.1 billion being implemented in the country jointly with Turkish investors.
“The implementation of this project is the result of effective cooperation between the government and business, as well as high investor confidence in the Kazakh economy,” the minister added.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, this is one of the largest greenhouse complexes in Kazakhstan, designed to produce 155,000 tons of tomatoes per year.
The Turkish company plans to invest $650 million in the project, which will be implemented in two stages until 2028.
Construction of the first phase spanning 208 hectares began in the summer of 2024. The total area of the complex will be 650 hectares.
By the end of this year, a 40-hectare section of the complex will be commissioned, enabling the domestic market to receive fresh tomatoes. Approximately 2,000 jobs will be created following the full launch of the first phase, increasing to 5,000 jobs upon completion of the entire project.
An important part of the project is the establishment of an agro-academic center with a modern laboratory that meets international standards. The center will train qualified personnel for the agricultural sector.
Today, Kazakhstan has greenhouses covering a total area of 1,300 hectares, producing approximately 200,000 tons of fresh vegetables per year.
The ALSERA KZ greenhouse complex will significantly increase the country’s greenhouse vegetable production, strengthening food security and reducing dependence on imports during the off-season.
