The number of suicides has decreased in Kazakhstan but teenage suicides increased

According to the Committee on Legal Statistics at the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan, 3,200 Kazakhstan citizens committed suicide in 2025, a decrease of 5.7% (or 193 people) compared to 2024. This is the lowest figure in recent years, according to analysts of Ranking.kz.

Since 2020 the number of suicides has decreased by 9.1%. Suicide attempts also decreased last year: just over 3,000 compared to 4,000 in 2024 (a decrease of 24.9%).

The highest number of completed and attempted suicides in 2025 was recorded in the East Kazakhstan (619), Turkestan (493), and Almaty (488) regions. In Almaty, 419 suicides were registered, and in Astana, 449. The lowest numbers were recorded in the Ulytau (49) and Mangystau (90) regions.

The issue of adolescent suicides is worth a separate consideration. Back in 2023, the country adopted a Comprehensive Plan for the Protection of Children from Violence, Suicide Prevention, and Ensuring Their Rights and Well-Being for 2023–2025. Active efforts to prevent adolescent suicidal behavior have begun, and Psychological Support Centers have been opened in the regions. In 2024, the number of completed teenage suicides decreased by 14.2%, but in 2025, the number of suicides among minors increased by 13.7%, essentially returning to the 2023 level. Last year, 199 teenagers took their own lives, including 64 children aged 5 to 14.

As for suicide attempts, there were twice as many as completed suicides last year: 405 cases. Compared to 2024, this figure decreased by 10.6%, but increased by 7.7% compared to 2023.

According to the Commissioner for Children’s Rights of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 62% of teenage suicides occurred against the backdrop of difficult family relationships with parents. In 10% of cases, children lived in disadvantaged environments or were in difficult life situations, and in 22% of cases of attempted and completed suicides, bullying was identified in the educational institution.
