Tajik president speaks at high-level event to launch International Decade for Action on Cryospheric Sciences

The high-level meeting on June 8 in the city of Nice, France to launch the International Decade for Action on Cryospheric Sciences, 2025-2034, was opened by Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon, as the head of a leading country in promoting the issues of water, climate and glaciers’ preservation.

In his speech, Rahmon stated that Tajikistan is participating in the event as one of the initiators of the International Decade for Action on Cryospheric Sciences.

Rahmon reflected on the alarming situation of climate change, its impact on the environment, the unprecedented melting of glaciers, the shortage of drinking water, Tajikistan’s global initiatives to address these problems, and put forward a number of proposals.

He emphasized that up to 60 percent of Central Asian glaciers are located in the mountains of Tajikistan, playing a key role in the development of all sectors and the sustainable future of the region.

Recalling the alarming process of rapid glacier melting and its devastating consequences, the President stated that the consequences of this process cause great damage to the economies and ecosystems of countries and threaten human life.

He noted that the proposal of Tajikistan and France to declare 2025-2034 as the Decade of Action for Cryosphere Sciences was supported by the international community.

Rahmon emphasized that given the importance of glaciers and in order to accurately study the impact of climate change on them, a Regional Coordination Center for Glaciation will be established in Dushanbe in cooperation with international partners.
