Kyrgyzstan’s Kumtor launches underground gold mining

On August 27, Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov took part in the official ceremony launching the underground gold mining project at the Kumtor mine. The head of state highlighted the importance of this project not only for strengthening the national economy but also for ensuring environmental sustainability.

“The underground gold mining project is set to operate for 17 years, with geological reserves of 147 tons of gold officially added to the national balance. Most importantly, the underground gold mining project excludes excessive excavation of waste rock. The launch of this project is the most important step toward preserving the environment and our glaciers, which have survived to this day,” he emphasized.

Japarov added that the Kumtor mine will continue the open pit mining from previously developed pits, along with the underground mining. He expressed confidence that the Kumtor deposit has a promising future, with its life of mine expected to continue for another 40 to 50 years in the best interests of the country and its people.

From May 2021 to December 2024, the Kumtor mine produced more than 54 tons of gold.
