Kyrgyzstan launches $430 million project to boost coal export to China

Kyrgyzstan and China have launched a strategic project aimed at increasing coal exports to China.

Kyrgyz and Chinese officials last week attended a time capsule-laying ceremony in the village of Nura in the southern Osh region to mark the official launch of the project with a total investment of $430 million.

The project is being implemented through a partnership between Kyrgyzkomur JSC, the national coal company, and China’s Xinjiang Dacheng Yuanlong Technology Co., Ltd.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the project aims to facilitate the export of coal mined at the Tekelik deposit via the Irkeshtam checkpoint on the border with China using a modern logistics system and reducing transportation costs.

A modern logistics center will be constructed on 10 hectares in the village of Nura, including two coal preparation plants and a belt conveyor system for coal transportation.

The plan is to increase coal transportation capacity to 10 million tons per year. The project’s first phase includes the construction of a 7.7-kilometer conveyor system, with subsequent phases increasing its total length to 157 kilometers.

The project will create an advanced logistics chain for Kyrgyz coal exports.

The initiative aims to strengthen Kyrgyzstan’s position as a key logistics and transit hub in Central Asia, and will also help elevate economic cooperation with China to a qualitatively new level by deepening economic integration.

The project will also have a significant multiplier effect on the national economy, creating additional growth momentum in the transportation, mining, and processing industries.
