Kyrgyzstan focuses on organic agriculture development

Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov last week signed a decree establishing National Organic Agriculture Day, to be celebrated annually on the last Friday of September.

The move reflects Kyrgyzstan’s aspiration to strengthen its position as a leading producer of organic agricultural products in the region.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, this decision is an important part of state policy aimed at promoting the green development of the agricultural sector, strengthening food security, preserving natural resources, and improving the quality of life of the population.

The National Day will be marked by organizing fairs and exhibitions of organic products, seminars and trainings for farmers, and educational events for young people.

In 2025, Kyrgyzstan approved the Program for the Development of Organic Production for 2025-2029 to support the country’s efforts aimed at expanding the production and export of environmentally friendly organic agricultural products.

The program is aimed at expanding certified organic farmland from the current 63,000 hectares (5.25% of arable land) to 200,000 hectares by 2029 and transitioning the Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions entirely to organic farming methods.

The government also aims to raise the share of organic products to 25% of total agricultural output and increase the proportion of organic goods in agricultural exports to 25%.

To achieve these goals, the program provides for the improvement of processing and logistics for organic exports and establishment of laboratories for organic product certification.
