Kazakhstan to use Korean AI technology to forecast floods

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment of the Republic of Korea have signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation for Flood Forecasting and Prevention through the Use of Artificial Intelligence Technology.

The document was signed during Korea International Water Week in Daegu, South Korea.

The parties will cooperate in developing modern monitoring systems and implementing digital platforms using artificial intelligence for flood risk assessment. Particular attention will be paid to joint development and adaptation of artificial intelligence algorithms to improve forecast accuracy, promptly identify potentially hazardous hydrological situations, and improve response mechanisms.

The parties also agreed to conduct joint research, exchange experts and advanced technologies, and implement innovative solutions in national water resource management systems.

“The head of state has emphasized the need to use artificial intelligence in the domestic water sector,” said Kazakh Deputy Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Aslan Abdraimov. “South Korea has extensive experience and advanced technologies in flood forecasting and modeling. The signed memorandum is another step toward improving the effectiveness of flood control measures in Kazakhstan and the large-scale digitalization of the country’s water management sector.”

Spring floods are a common occurrence in Kazakhstan. In the spring of 2024, the country’s western and northern regions suffered from unprecedented floods caused by the rapid snowmelt.
