Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan expand green corridor for vegetables and fruits

Turkmenistan is an important partner of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Over the past five years, bilateral trade has increased four times and over the last two years, mutual trade has consistently exceeded $500 million, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister–Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin said during a meeting with the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Hojamyrat Geldimyradov.

As to trade in agricultural products, in the first 9 months of 2025, Kazakh exports to Turkmenistan amounted to $221.7 million due to an increase in supplies of flour, vegetable oil, and other processed goods.

Zhumangarin proposed to increase supply volumes and expand the line of agro-industrial products, including wheat, corn, lentils, peas, soybeans, sunflower oil, flour, and sugar.

Imports from Turkmenistan are also growing: in the 9 months of 2025, it reached $141.9 million. Besides natural gas, fruits and vegetables are imported. In 2025, supplies of Turkmen tomatoes exceeded 30 thousand tons and became the second most significant commodity in the structure of imports from Turkmenistan.

“We are interested in fruit and vegetable products being present in our market. Everything that you supply — tomatoes, fruits, vegetables – we are ready to accept within the framework of the green corridor,” emphasized Zhumangarin.

Special attention was paid to the development of transport and logistics projects. Geldimyradov informed about the start of construction of a dry port on the border with Afghanistan’s Herat province and proposed Kazakhstan to join the project.

The parties also discussed the prospects of forming the transit corridor Kazakhstan – Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Pakistan, including the construction of the railway line Herat – Turgundi. Zhumangarin and Geldimyradov confirmed the intention to continue work on developing transport, trade and logistics ties, creating additional opportunities for business and expanding integration between the countries.

In January–September 2025, trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan amounted to $363.6 million, 5.4% more than in the same period last year ($345 million).
