Kazakhstan and Mongolia set to increase trade to $500 million

Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan Serik Zhumangarin held a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia Khasuuriyin Gankhuyag on January 24.

Zhumangarin noted that Mongolia is an important partner of Kazakhstan in the Asian region, and that bilateral cooperation has been consistently developing in the spirit of mutual respect and trust.

The main focus was placed on trade and economic cooperation as the key foundation of the Kazakhstan–Mongolia partnership. The heads of both states have set a goal to increase bilateral trade turnover to $500 million in the medium term. The parties expressed confidence that this target would be achieved through expanding the range of mutual supplies, developing cooperation projects, and gradually eliminating trade and administrative barriers.

In January–November 2025, trade between Kazakhstan and Mongolia amounted to $121.5 million (+5.5%), including Kazakh exports of $113 million and imports of $8.6 million. The structure of Kazakhstan’s exports is dominated by tobacco products, rapeseed, bread, flour and confectionery products, food products, oilseeds, as well as engines and engineering products. Imports from Mongolia include meat and meat products, cashmere, footwear, carpets, and wool products.

In order to further increase trade turnover, the Kazakh side plans to send a trade mission to Mongolia to establish direct business contacts, as well as to present industrial and free economic zones and Kazakhstan’s export potential.

The high potential for cooperation in the agricultural sector was emphasized separately. The parties discussed opportunities to expand exports of Kazakh agricultural products, as well as prospects for supplying veterinary vaccines with possible localization of their production in Mongolia.

Khasuuriyin Gankhuyag noted the strategic importance of Kazakhstan for Mongolia as a regional partner and expressed confidence in the intensification of bilateral cooperation in the current year. He emphasized Kazakhstan’s role as a connecting link between Mongolia and the countries of Central Asia, and also expressed interest in establishing a joint working group to identify and eliminate non-tariff barriers. The Mongolian side also expressed interest in deepening cooperation in the areas of standardization, veterinary protection, and livestock breeding.
