Kazakhstan and China to build 500 MW wind farm in Karaganda region

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy and Karaganda Wind Power LLP, a Kazakh-Chinese joint venture, have signed an investment agreement for the construction of a 500 MW wind farm in the Karaganda region. The signing took place on the sidelines of the Regional Ecological Summit in Astana last week.

Investment in the project will total $645 million. The new wind plant is expected to annually generate 1.6 billion kWh of green electricity.

It will also have a significant environmental impact, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.3 million tons annually.

The project is part of Kazakhstan’s large-scale program to develop renewable energy generation.

According to the Ministry of Energy, renewable energy generation in Kazakhstan reached 8.6 billion kWh in 2025, exceeding official targets by 19.4%. Renewables accounted for 7% of total electricity output, up from 6.43% in 2024.

Kazakhstan currently operates 162 renewable energy facilities with a combined capacity of approximately 3.5 GW. In 2026, authorities plan to increase renewable output to 8.8 billion kWh.

The country’s total electricity generation stood at 123.1 billion kWh in 2025 and is expected to rise to 126.5 billion kWh in 2026.

Kazakhstan aims to increase the share of renewables to 15% of the total energy mix by 2030 and 50% by 2050.
