Karakalpakstan launches new agricultural development program to boost local economy

The government of Uzbekistan’s Karakalpakstan autonomous region has unveiled a comprehensive agricultural development program aimed at revitalizing the region’s economy and improving food security. The new initiative, which includes investments totaling over $50 million, will focus on enhancing irrigation infrastructure, introducing modern farming techniques, and expanding the cultivation of high-value crops.

Investing in Irrigation Infrastructure

One of the key elements of the program is the modernization of the region’s irrigation system, which has been a longstanding challenge for local farmers. With a significant portion of Karakalpakstan’s land affected by water scarcity, the government is prioritizing the construction of new water reservoirs and the repair of existing canals.

“We have allocated funds to rehabilitate the aging irrigation infrastructure, which will help increase the efficiency of water usage in our agriculture,” said Amirbek Rakhmanov, the Head of Karakalpakstan’s Ministry of Agriculture. “This is crucial not only for crop production but also for ensuring sustainable water management in the region.”

The program also aims to reduce the dependency on traditional irrigation methods, introducing more water-efficient technologies like drip irrigation.

Diversification of Crops and Economic Expansion

As part of the agricultural push, the program plans to promote the cultivation of high-value crops such as fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants. Local farmers will be provided with subsidies and training to shift from conventional cotton farming to more profitable and sustainable agricultural practices.

The government’s goal is to diversify Karakalpakstan’s agricultural output, reducing reliance on cotton, which has dominated the region’s economy for decades. In addition, targeted efforts will focus on the creation of local processing plants to add value to agricultural products, stimulating both rural employment and economic growth.

Focus on Green Technologies and Sustainability

In line with global trends, the new agricultural development plan emphasizes the adoption of green technologies. Solar-powered irrigation systems and the use of organic fertilizers will be promoted to reduce environmental impact and improve the long-term viability of farming in the region.

“We are committed to not only improving our agricultural sector but also ensuring that we do so in an environmentally sustainable way,” said Rakhmanov.

Supporting Local Farmers and Communities

The government has also outlined measures to support local farmers, offering low-interest loans for agricultural equipment and input materials. As part of the initiative, vocational training programs will be launched to enhance the skills of the agricultural workforce.

“The goal is to create a self-sufficient and resilient agricultural sector that benefits both farmers and the wider Karakalpak community,” Rakhmanov added.

Outlook and Regional Impact

With the success of this program, the government hopes to increase agricultural exports from Karakalpakstan and reduce its dependence on imported food. The initiative is expected to improve the livelihoods of thousands of local farmers and contribute to the region’s economic stability.
