Football: Uzbekistan expands partnership with FIFA

On September 8 in Tashkent, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received the President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Gianni Infantino.

The FIFA President congratulated the Uzbek leader and the people of Uzbekistan on the historic event – the Uzbek national football team reaching the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States.

The parties discussed expanding Uzbekistan’s partnership with FIFA, primarily in transforming football management, developing young talent, training coaches, referees, managers, medical staff and technical specialists to international standards.

The continuing close cooperation on the implementation of joint programs for popularizing football among youth was noted.

With FIFA’s technical assistance, a modern National Football Center has been established in Uzbekistan.

Special attention was paid to organizing major FIFA tournaments and events in Uzbekistan.

An agreement was reached on the opening a regional FIFA office for Central Asian countries in Tashkent.

The President of Uzbekistan awarded Gianni Infantino the Dustlik order for his personal contribution to the development and promotion of Uzbek football on the international arena.

Mirziyoyev and Infantino also attended the final match of CAFA Nations Cup tournament at the Olympic stadium in Tashkent. The national team of Uzbekistan defeated Iran’s team and became the winner of CAFA Nations Cup–2025.

CAFA is the Central Asian Football Association. Its tournament is held once in two years. In the current tournament, besides the teams of Uzbekistan and Iran, teams from Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, India, and Oman participated.
