With the financial support from the European Union, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and European Investment Bank (EIB) have supported the construction and commissioning of a new wastewater treatment plant in Uzgen, Kyrgyzstan. The facility, delivered under the “Rehabilitation of Water Supply and Sewerage Systems in Uzgen” project, will provide 10,000 residents with access to sanitation services, according to the Delegation of the European Union to the Kyrgyz Republic.
Designed to treat up to 2,000 m³ of wastewater per day, the plant will undergo a three-stage treatment process to ensure full compliance with the environmental standards of the Kyrgyz Republic, significantly improving the quality of life for local communities.
With the commissioning of the new wastewater treatment plant, 10,000 residents of Uzgen will benefit from a modern, centralised sewerage system. In the initial phase, 25 apartment buildings, 7 schools, 7 kindergartens, as well as public, social, and commercial facilities will be connected to the network.
The new system will bring tangible improvements to daily life, enabling residents to use modern sanitary facilities with ease. In general, within the project, 41 km of water supply networks and 30 km of sewerage networks were renewed, four water intake facilities were modernised (including six reconstructed boreholes and five replaced pumps), and new equipment and vehicles were procured.
The Project is financed by an EU grant of €5 million, an EBRD loan of USD 2.75 million, and an EIB loan of €2.5 million. Technical assistance to the Project is funded by a €400 thousand grant from the Government of Japan and an EU grant of €829 thousand.
