Crude oil remains Kazakhstan’s main export commodity

In 2024, Kazakhstan retained its position as a major exporter of mineral resources, particularly crude oil, according to the country’s Ministry of Trade and Integration.

In 2024, Kazakhstan’s exports exceeded $81 billion, with crude oil earning $42.9 billion or 52.5% of the country’s exports.

Kazakhstan also exported uranium ($4.6 billion), copper and copper cathodes ($4.1 billion), copper ores and concentrates ($3.2 billion), as well as ferroalloys, natural gas, wheat, and oil products.

Imports totaled $59.8 billion, down 1% from 2023.

The main import items were passenger cars ($2.3 billion), aircraft ($1.8 billion), pharmaceuticals ($1.7 billion), and telecommunications equipment.

Last year, China, Russia, and Italy were Kazakhstan’s largest trading partners, both in exports and imports.

The beginning of 2025 confirmed last year’s trends. In January, Kazakhstan’s exports amounted to $4.5 billion, with crude oil again accounting for 60% of the total. Copper, ferroalloys, wheat, uranium, natural gas, and sunflower oil also remained major export commodities.

Imports in January exceeded $2.8 billion. The leading import items were cellular phones, car bodies, medicines, passenger cars, construction equipment, and engines.

According to the ministry, in 2025, Kazakhstan will continue strategic partnerships with China, Russia, and the European Union, as well as strengthen its position in the Central Asian markets.
