Constitutional Court sets date for next presidential election in Kyrgyzstan

The Constitutional Court of the Kyrgyz Republic has ruled that the next presidential elections in the country should take place on January 24, 2027.

According to the Constitutional Court, the mandate of President Sadyr Japarov, who was elected in January 2021 under the 2010 Constitution, should be completed within the originally established six-year term. The five-year presidential term according to the new 2021 Constitution does not apply to the term of the incumbent president.

President Japarov’s current six-year term counts as his first, giving him the right to run for a second five-year term.

The Court’s decision emphasizes that the electoral mandate is the result of the direct expression of the will of the people and represents a completed legal fact. Its parameters, including the term of office, cannot be changed retroactively.

According to the Constitutional Court, a retroactive reduction in the term would contradict the principle of legal certainty and the legitimacy of elections.

This means that Kyrgyzstan will not hold early presidential elections.
