Central Asian countries sign Samarkand Declaration on conservation of wildlife and flora

As part of the High-Level Dialogue on enhancing the strategic impact of the 20th Conference of the Parties to CITES, a signing ceremony was held for the Samarkand Declaration and the Regional Cooperation Action Plan for 2026–2032 to support the sustainable use of wildlife and plant resources and combat illegal trade in wild animals and plants in Central Asia between Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

The adopted declaration and action plan, developed jointly with TRAFFIC International, reflect the commitment of Central Asian countries to collectively address increasing threats to the region’s biodiversity associated with habitat loss, climate change, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade. The document provides for strengthening cooperation among national environmental, customs, law-enforcement, and judicial authorities; establishing national task forces to combat wildlife crime; improving information exchange; and promoting modern monitoring technologies.

Regional cooperation will be enhanced through the regular exchange of operational data, development of joint control mechanisms, establishment of a regional network to counter illegal trade, as well as coordinated actions in border areas. In addition, the countries agreed to develop and implement a unified strategic framework covering efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking, restore ecosystems, protect rare species, build specialist capacity, and support sustainable economic solutions, including the development of ecotourism and engagement of local communities in conservation initiatives.

The signing of the Samarkand Declaration underscores the determination of Central Asian states to act together to preserve the region’s unique natural heritage, ensuring a harmonious balance between environmental sustainability, social participation, and economic development.
