In a fresh move to strengthen transport cooperation between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, a major agreement and contract have been signed for the development and investment in Torghundi Port, TOLOnews reported.
According to the agreement, the dry port of Torghundi in Afghanistan’s Herat province will be expanded with an initial investment of $5 million.
The project includes the construction of warehouses, the design and establishment of new facilities for loading and unloading commercial goods.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Public Works, said: “The agreement outlines the construction of new warehouses and facilities to be activated for handling goods along the Torghundi–Herat railway line.”
He added that the investment will be made by Turkmenistan, but implementation will take place within Afghan territory under national laws. Upon completion, the cost will be reimbursed to the Turkmen company through revenue generated from the facilities.
Turkmenistan is one of Afghanistan’s key economic and trade partners. In addition to importing electricity, oil, and gas, Afghanistan collaborates with Turkmenistan on major regional projects such as TAPI, fiber optic networks, and railway development.
With the implementation of this project, trade transit between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan is expected to increase, paving the way for broader regional economic integration.
