Uzbekistan ranked 104th out of 123 countries in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, the world’s largest ranking of countries and regions by English skills based on test results of 2.2 million adults, Tashkent Today reported.
Uzbekistan’s score 429 is significantly below the global average score of 488. Compared to the previous year, the country lowered by six positions, with an overall “very low” English language proficiency.
Uzbeks are better at writing and speaking (“low” proficiency), while reading and listening skills remain “very low.”
Adults over 31 years of age demonstrated the highest level of English proficiency. Regionally, Fergana (score 470) was the national leader, ahead of Tashkent and Andijan, while the weakest result was recorded in the Jizzakh region.
In the Central Asian region, Uzbekistan ranked above Kazakhstan (107th) and Tajikistan (110th), but below Kyrgyzstan (101st). Data since 2018 indicate a steady decline in English proficiency: over the past seven years, Uzbekistan has fallen in the ranking from 86th to 104th place.
