Leaders of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan forge trilateral cooperation

On August 22, a trilateral meeting of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev was held in the Avaza National Tourist Zone in Turkmenistan.

Berdimuhamedov emphasized that at present Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan demonstrate a high example of interaction in the political and diplomatic sphere, making a significant contribution to maintaining global peace, security and sustainable development.

In the context of developing energy partnership, the export of electricity is of particular importance. Speaking about this, Berdimuhamedov mentioned the positive practice of cooperation in this area with Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan annually supplies Uzbekistan with electricity in significant volumes.

Noting the prospects for exporting Turkmen electricity to Azerbaijan, Berdimuhamedov expressed confidence that with the commissioning of a new power plant with a capacity of 1574 MW on the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea, additional opportunities will appear for energy supplies to Azerbaijan and through its territory further to European countries.

He also emphasized the need to consider issues related to the export of natural gas from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.

The meeting participants noted that in recent years, the volume of trade between Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan has doubled. The share of industrial goods in the structure of trade turnover has reached 40 percent.

Special attention was paid to the issues of transit corridors development, including effective utilization of the capacities of Turkmenbashi and Baku ports, joint development of modern logistics infrastructure. 

Agreements were reached on the joint work on the projects for developing logistics infrastructure and ferry services across the Caspian Sea. 

The negotiations also focused on increasing trade turnover and expanding the scale of industrial cooperation.
