16,000 Kazakhstanis live in extremely poor families with incomes below food basket cost

In the first quarter of 2025, there were 160,400 households in Kazakhstan with incomes below the subsistence level, 0.1% less than a year earlier. These households included 924,400 people, compared to 928,100 a year earlier, according to an analysis of finprom.kz.

In terms of regions, the largest number of families with incomes below the subsistence level lived in the Turkestan region — 21,900, 6.8% more than in the first quarter of last year. Almaty (17,100 families) and Zhambyl region (10,600 families) were in second and third place.

In addition to citizens with incomes below the subsistence level, 3,000 families in Kazakhstan had incomes below the cost of the food basket, 14.5% more than a year earlier. The number of people living in such extremely poor families increased by 7.7% and reached 16,400. Most families with such low incomes lived in the Karaganda region — 898 families (6,300 people), Shymkent – 752 families (3,000 people), and Zhetysu region – 469 families (2,300 people).

The largest number of citizens with incomes below the subsistence level — 788,100 people — lived in families of five or more people, 86,500 lived in families of four, 40,400 in families of three, 7,000 in families of two, and 2,400 in families of one.

As for the families with extremely low incomes, 11,600 people lived in households of five or more people and 4,900 in households of four.

According to Our World in Data, Kazakhstan is among the countries with the lowest share of the population living in extreme poverty — only 0.02% of the population. Among the CIS countries, the highest figures ​​are recorded in Uzbekistan – 2.25%, Armenia – 0.78%, and Kyrgyzstan – 0.31%.
